After the recent success of Startup Weekend Calgary, where 80 people collaborate to create 11 new startups and the winner Parley was offered $25,000 at the Canadian Cloud Showdown, a bigger event is planned from July 12-14 during Alberta Tech Week.

If you’re unfamiliar, Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event where people curious about entrepreneurship come together to share ideas, build teams, create products, and launch startups. It is a huge community of entrepreneurs, with over 400 events in 100 countries around the world in 2012.

“This next edition of Startup Weekend Calgary will have a bigger focus on enterprise and B2B applications,” explains Lloyed Lobo, Partner at Boast Capital and one of the organizers of the event. “I think Calgarian startups are loosing sight of the opportunities that lay in our backyard. There are many business problems to solve here for companies who have the potential to write big checks.”

Providing support to this initiative is Houston’s SURGE Accelerator, the only early stage accelerator in the world for entrepreneurs focused on energy software.  Since its inception last year, SURGE companies have raised over $10 million in funding and the accelerator has gained support from Shell, Schlumberger, Oracle and Silicon Valley Bank to name a few.

“Calgary is a major hub in the global energy ecosystem that naturally converges customers, capital and ideas”, says Kirk Coburn, Founder of SURGE. “And software is disrupting the industry across the entire value chain. SURGE has seen promising ideas and entrepreneurs come out of Startup Weekends and similar entrepreneurial events. We are looking forward to seeing the results of Startup Weekend Calgary this summer.”

While SURGE will provide a prize to the Best Energy Tech Startup, there will be prizes for Best Enterprise Startup and Best Consumer Startup as well. Early bird tickets are on sale here.
