Katipult, a Calgary startup that began as a community of non-profit crowdfunding campaigns, has shifted its focus to “Enterprise Cause Marketing.” The team behind Katipult, JOI Media, first started it as a way to support their own non-profit, JOI to the World, which puts together care packages for the less fortunate in Calgary, and has raised about $500,000 over the past five years.

While Katipult didn’t see enough traction from non-profits, they were receiving significant interest from enterprises and organizations that wanted to use crowdfunding as a way to better engage customers and fans. As a test, they started to customize and private-label the solution and secured early customers in InvestYYC (supported by ATB Financial) and Astrazeneca.

“In our conversations with several dozen enterprises, we found that they understood marketing budgets are being wasted on advertising that doesn’t convert, while Cause Marketing campaigns are generating a better ROI by way of positive public relations, improved customer relations, additional marketing opportunities, and more sales,” says Hafiz Mitha, Co-founder and COO of Katipult.

Hafiz’s comments are in line with statistics that show 39% of the population would recommend cause-related brands over other similar non-cause related brands. According to a report published by onPhilantrophy, it is estimated that $1.78 billion will be spent on Cause Marketing in North America this year, a 4.8% increase from 2012.

To augment their enterprise efforts, the startup has just finalized an advisory board comprised of industry experts including Todd Simpson, Chief of Innovation at Mozilla and C100 Charter Member; David McIninch, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management at ADP Canada; Tom Short, CEO of Kudos; Scott Valentine, VP of Marketing and Communications at Solium Capital; and Lloyed Lobo – Partner at Boast Capital and Plug and Play Canada.

“We want to make it simple for enterprises to run Cause Marketing campaigns and give them all the tools to optimize their marketing spend. We’re honored and excited to have this caliber of support to help catapult us in the enterprise space,” concludes Hafiz.
